I wrote my play in a three-day flurry in May 2018. I have always found Elizabeth an impressive figure, and a touchstone for my own sense of English heritage, such as I have, although I do not confuse this with any assessment of her as morally perfect. Moreover, I am nearing the age when we no longer pretend that this body is forever, and I find myself reflecting on end-of-life issues. Thinking of Christ's threefold temptation in the wilderness, I imagine seven final visitors to Her Majesty, ending with the only one whom she cannot order to leave. The text of my play consists entirely of forty-nine (i.e. seven times seven) sonnets, each of which uses a Petrarchan rhyme scheme (ABBA-ABBA-CDE-CDE).
