Howard Twining was a soldier in the infantry during World War II, serving in the Philippines and Okinawa in the Pacific theater. This is an abridged collection of his letters home to his wife Olive in Placerville, California, from June 1944 to December 1945. By early 1944 the United States had been at war for two years. Howard was both an idealist and a man of action. He was 29 and had two young children; he most likely would not have been drafted. But as the war intensified and Uncle Sam's requests for recruits became more urgent, he felt he had a duty to help in his country's war effort.
