Dear Tom

Hurricanes, tornados, floods. Living through grief is very much like living through a constant storm. Sometimes you have time to prepare because you hear the thunder and lightning. You can see the dark clouds off in the distance. You know what to expect, and you can protect yourself. Oftentimes grief appears out of nowhere. It arrives in the middle of mundane daily tasks, leaving in its wake devastating mental and emotional destruction, and it takes days or often weeks to regain your footing. I remember Mr. Kilgo teaching us in seventh grade science that plants grow the most not during the beautiful and sunny days of spring and summer, or even in the slow gentle rains. They grow the most when the winds are fierce and the storms are raging. He said you could take a cross-section of the earth during a vicious storm and literally observe the roots reaching further down into the soil-digging in and holding on for dear life. So I guess the question that's being asked of me is, how far down do your roots go? The storms of life are raging; the fierce winds are blowing all around you. Can you feel His love as He gently prunes back what would prevent you from growing more like Him? Are you trying to make it on your own strength? Or are you utterly dependent on Him? Digging in and holding on to Him for dear life is the safest place you can be when the storms appear.
