Dear Black Man

Dear Black Man...

Before you turn these pages, there is something I need you to know. This book was not written to judge you. It was written to see you. Not your prison number. Not your case. Not the headlines people read before deciding who you are. Not the worst day of your life. Not the mistakes that followed you into a courtroom or the sentences that followed you into a cell. You. The human being is underneath all of it.

Somewhere along the way, this world became comfortable burying Black men while they were still alive. Long before prison walls, many were buried beneath circumstances they did not create and wounds they did not know how to heal. Some were buried beneath broken homes and neighborhoods where survival was valued more than vulnerability. Some were buried beneath poverty, violence, addiction, abandonment, and expectations so heavy they never had the chance to discover who they might have become without them. Many learned how to protect themselves before they learned how to understand themselves.

Too many Black boys grow up carrying burdens that would crush grown men. They are taught to be tough before they are taught to be whole. They are taught to hide fear, suppress grief, and swallow pain. They learn quickly that tears invite judgment and vulnerability can be mistaken for weakness. By the time they become men, many have spent years performing strength while privately carrying wounds that never received attention, language, or healing.

For some, those wounds eventually became anger. For others, they became silence. For others still, they became choices that altered the course of their lives forever. And by the time the world finally paid attention, it was often in the form of handcuffs, mugshots, court dates, prison sentences, or statistics. Society looked at the outcome while rarely asking enough questions about the pain that came before it.

Now many of you sit inside concrete walls while strangers' debate whether your life still has value. They discuss criminal justice, rehabilitation, punishment, and redemption as if they are talking about concepts instead of human beings. But I need you to hear me clearly: you are still human. Regardless of what you have done, regardless of what others believe about you, regardless of how forgotten you may feel, there is still breath in your body. That matters. It means your story is still being written. It means there is still work left for God to do in your life.

This book is not an attempt to excuse harmful choices. Accountability matters. Consequences matter. Pain passed down does not erase pain caused. The people hurt by our actions deserve honesty, responsibility, and truth. Yet accountability and humanity can exist in the same space. A man can acknowledge the damage he has caused while also recognizing that he is more than the sum of his failures.

I often find myself asking a question that rarely gets enough attention: how many Black boys were ever truly taught how to become whole men? Not simply hard men. Not feared men. Not men defined by survival, reputation, money, pride, or power. Whole men. Men who understand their emotions. Men who know how to grieve. Men who can be disciplined without being humiliated. Men who can face rejection without becoming consumed by it. Men who understand that healing is not weakness and vulnerability is not surrender.

Too many Black men have spent their lives carrying emotional weight in silence. Some carry guilt so heavy it follows them into their dreams. Some replay their mistakes every night when the noise of the day disappears and the cell grows quiet. Some miss their children so deeply that the ache settles into their bones. Some are angry at the world. Some are angry at themselves. Some have not heard the words "I love you" in years. And some have slowly convinced themselves that their lives no longer matter.
