On the Reach, dying is a cooldown. Unless somebody claims your Final Ticket.
Sil Marrow watched the timer over her brother's respawn stone run down to nothing on Boot Hill, and watched it break instead of bloom. Tobin died three times in eleven days - a minute, an hour, then eleven days of cooldown and every scrap of Marrow he owned. He paid it. He should have come up spitting red dirt. The System printed a different answer, and a name: C. Grale.
A Final Ticket means running a gunslinger to ground at their own Anchor, where they are strongest, and beating them there anyway. Nobody spends one on a twenty-two-year-old with forty Marrow to his name. Which means Toby was never the point.
So Sil takes inventory, the way you do when the ground gives out. Bounty boards. Buff-whiskey. Cooldowns she cannot afford to burn, against a man who has already proved he can end someone for good.
The trail runs west, and the timer runs the wrong way.
