Book Overview

Henry Gamadge, that Gentleman Sleuth extraordinaire, mostly sleuths in New York City, but this time he's sleuthing it up in Maine

With talk of war all over the radio waves, Henry Gamadge is back in Maine, this time by invitation of Detective Mitchell, whom he so aptly helped in Unexpected Night. Mitchell has a real puzzler on his hands: three different children have been poisoned with deadly nightshade, and there is no motive that could possibly link all three poisonings, beside the fact that the children all live in the same small community. Could the Gypsies, whose encampment is nearby, be involved? And was the death of a state trooper at about the same time a mere coincidence? Gamadge and Mitchell will eventually answer all these questions, while Elizabeth Daly paints a picture of a small community at the end of summer and right before a world war.

Stylish and absorbing Henry Gamadge mystery

This is an early Elizabeth Daly mystery, written before she learned to simplify her complex plots and focus on psychological interest, rather than strewing red herrings wildly about. The date is September, 1939. Against the backdrop of war's outbreak, an urbane New Yorker and amateur detective, Henry Gamadge, helps Maine police investigate the mystery of three -- possibly four -- children poisoned with deadly nightshade in a single day. As always, the initial mystery leads Gamadge into deeper and darker territory, as he uncovers long-ago family misdeeds beneath the surface of apparent social respectability.
