A 'Men's Book' for men and women

The subject matter of this book is NOT Italian Claudio Ranieri, ex-manager of Chelsea football club. He had the dagger of dismissal hanging over him for 6 months, likening his job tenure to that of `a dead man walking'. But, no; this is about more weighty matters, and will do you good. Many books on Christian `men's issues' are either patronising (taking the reader to have little sense), or make the reader feel so bad that he (assuming a male readership) cannot look in the mirror for a week. Works from both sections can give scriptural references that clutter up the text. This volume is not from either camp, and is refreshingly honest. It seems as if the authors (primarily two, with guest chapters, including, dare I say, one written by ....... a WOMAN) are on the same planet as real men. They have been there, had the same problems as all males of the species, and in some cases are still battling to overcome. The net effect is that I felt included, rather than preached at or patronised. Real issues are covered, with some interesting questions at the end of each chapter. This lends itself to a group discussion, after friends have all worked through the same chapter. If that were so (and come to think of it, it is a good idea), it would be in the spirit of the book to have that discussion take place in a local hostelry. Christian discussions are not just for `church events'. There are not any set answers in the pages (as in `one size fits all'), just as there are not any in life, and it is pleasing to have none proffered. Some men have been badly harmed by the one holy answer to hard questions, be that `pray more', or the advised frequent use of cold showers. I found the pages helpful, provoking trains of thoughts beyond the written words. Consider this: did you have helpful role-models at significant times in your life? What made these people special? Now for the killer punch! Are you a role-model? What is there about you that would be helpful to others? [Here, it is not just `father figures' - it is possible to be a role-model for those older than yourself]. Keeping a healthy thought life, being the butt of practical jokes by those who loathe you for your faith, a right and honouring attitude to women, placing work in a proper perspective, it is all there. There are some nice one-liners, and challenges to the way some of us think. It is possible to be wise and radical, to be a hard tackling footballer [even one that plays on a Sunday] and to be a Christian. Can I leave you with a helpful one-liner? "Don't try to be a good Christian man, just to be a good man who is a Christian".
