DEAD MAN'S GOLD, published by Five Star Publishing in 2006, collects three short stories/novellas written by T. T. Flynn. Flynn, who spent much of his life in New Mexico, wrote over 100 western stories during his career, one of which was made into "The Man from Laramie" starring Jimmy Stewart. The titles found in DEAD MAN'S GOLD all date from the 1940s. The first story - "Tide of Empire" - is the longest piece and, in my estimate, the best. It tells of the struggle of Matt Jordan and his partner as they try to make a go of a logging operation in Wisconsin, their efforts being undermined by a crooked competitor. Given the wonderful job Flynn does in describing 19th century logging, you wonder if he was a logger himself; the detail is fabulous. Unfortunately, after 105 pages of first-rate storytelling, Flynn wraps the story up in too hurried of a fashion. "Fourteen Votes Brand a Maverick" deals with Bob Brule, who has just been elected sheriff of Red Rock only to discover the election was fixed. His efforts to undo the injustice and make amends with his defeated opponent make for fast-paced reading. "Dead Man's Gold" was the weakest entry, a formulaic story pitting a young westerner against a ruthless villain over ownership of a seemingly played-out silver mine. All in all, DEAD MAN'S GOLD was a mixed bag but enjoyable. Recommended.
