I really like the inside tuning tips and recommendations. A lot of other books describe parameters, but do not really give a recommendation. In this book you'll find many recommendations, not many it depends. For a first edtion, it is well done. I'm sure the next edition will have even more details and examples. I use this book and the Adv. Cert Guide for all my work.

This book is written by a DBA for DBAs. Their is no hemming and hawing in this book when it comes to actual tuning recommendations. The author has done a good job at imparting his knowledge to us. This is knowledge he has won in the trenches on our behalf. Im glad Phil included Chapte3 on Logical and physical design. I can use it to show my manager how it should be done. The chapters on Type-2 indexes, tuning bufferpools, including the new block-based bufferpools, the Chapter on SQL tuning makes it very clear on how to identify, tune SQL, or create indexes to eliminates all those sorts that I dind in my Peoplesoft and Siebel systems running rampant. This book tells you about all the new features in V8 and tell's you how to use them. It is a good mixture between V8 enhancements and contains extensive tuning techniques, methodologies, and good examples where needed. You need to have this book to tune-up your databases. I also like Snow's book for the day to day admin tasks. I can't wait for the second edition of this book to come it, cause you know it will just build on the wealth of information provided in the 1st edition.

I've heard Phil speak and present and this book just builds on the excellent material Phil's provided in the past. It is a complete reference for monitoring and tuning DB2. If you need to know how to tune DB2 and what to look for, this book is for you.
Good tuning advice based on solid experience

I found the tuning advice for DB CFG parameters and tuning sort to be verfy helpful. The sort chapter cleared up misunderstandings I had on sort. The information on type-2 indexes was really good. Chapter 10, Monitoring, is the best reference I have found on how to use and interpret monitoring output in solving performance problems.

This book has really helped me understand DB2. Coming from a Sybase background, I didn't know where to start. The DB CFG, bufferpool and sort tuning information helped me get up to speed quick. This book contains information I couldn't find anywhere else.
