Dennis Bangs Chapin was a successful, well-known lawyer, a Texas state representative, a former Hidalgo County judge and a millionaire in the year 1910. On Thursday evening, August 17, in a San Antonio bar, he shot my cousin, Oscar J. Rountree, in the head with his 44-caliber revolver. Oscar died at 5:00 the next morning in a San Antonio hospital. He was tried for murder and acquited claiming self-defense. After 1912 Chapin moved constantly and was involved in many legal battles and business ventures. He represented the second woman to die in the California gas chamber and a woman who cheated the Texas electric chair by committing suicide.
