David Bowie was a highly influential and iconic British musician, songwriter, and actor. He was prominent in the music industry for over 50 years and referred to by many as an innovator, characterized by his constant reinvention of his music, his visual presentation, and stagecraft; all of which have impacted virtually all popular music to come after him. Thus, he is one of the world's best-selling musicians with record sales of over 140 million and was inducted in to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1996. Bowie's early alter ego, Ziggy Stardust, garnered the musician widespread popularity and marked the beginning of his prolific career. In addition to reinventing popular music, Bowie acted in film, television, and on stage and was awarded numerous accolades for his accomplishments. Bowie passed away on 10 January 2016 at the age of 69 from liver cancer and right after release of his final album, Blackstar.
