I wanted to read a book on David that would supplement my personal times spent during the morning in Bible study, meditation and prayer. I chose this one and went through a chapter each day. The chapters are around 8 pages in length which make them good for devotional reading. The view of David presented is from the Bible alone and does not bring in outside critical material. The book goes through David's life like a biography but brings up points of application for life today. Chapters I found to be inspiring were "The Faith of God's Elect," "The Cave of Adullam," and "Yet Have I Set My King." David was "a man after God's own heart," but with many flaws. Even when he did stray from God in disobedience he returned in true repentance with a desire to renew his relationship with his Lord. That is what, in my opinion, makes the life of David one that we can still learn from even today. This is a good book for pleasure reading but not as a critical study of David's life.
