Second Book in the Series

This is the second book in a series by what was a new authorto me, at least that is until I had read her first book, Murder on Good Friday and found it innovative and enjoyable. The series features the character of Lord Godwin, the Bailiff of Hexham and ex-Crusader as the equivalent of a modern day detective. It is always nice to find a new author with new characters and even better, the books takes place in the north of England. I have become so used to reading about Crowner John the lead character of author Bernard Knight and Sir Baldwin de Furnshill, Michael Jeck's lead character. One of them being the Coroner for the West Country and the other Keeper of the King`s Peace and both of them tracking down murderers, but in the Devon and Cornwall area. Excellent though they both are, a trip up to the north of England is like a breath of fresh air, albeit a decade or so later than the above mentioned. This second book takes place in 1221 and once again Godwin is called upon to solve the problem of a death that has taken place. Gruffydd an arrogant and ignorant merchant has been found dead. At first Lord Godwin believes the death to be an accident but when he realises that no one is mourning the passing of the merchant he begins to suspect that the death may well have been murder. Godwin also has the problem of Lady Constance the widow of his dearest friend being kidnapped by a man who is determined to make her his wife despite her objections. Godwin's code of honour dictates that he must do everything in his power to obtain her release while at the same time attempting to solve the murder of the merchant everyone despised . . .
