Daughter of the Black Flag

By Sonja Dewing

They said a girl like me belonged in someone's kitchen. So I took a ship instead.

I was supposed to spend my life scrubbing other people's floors. Then a ship's captain looked at a poor Chinese girl with nothing to her name and saw a pirate. He offered me a way out, and I took it with both hands.

Now I captain a ship of my own. I've broken every rule there is for a woman on the water, and I'd do it again. But the greatest treasure of my career is aboard a rival vessel, and the only way to claim it is to sign on as their cook. Easy enough. Nobody looks twice at the girl with the ladle.

Except someone does.

Andy is a sailor with a secret as big as mine. She's lived her whole life as a boy, hiding from a father's shame and a world that has no mercy for daughters like her. I should keep my distance. Instead, we're sailing together through waters ruled by sea serpents and ancient magic, chasing a prize that's already cost more than I planned to pay.

The world wants women to make themselves small. Andy and I picked up cutlasses instead. But freedom always has a price, and I'm starting to think the real treasure isn't gold at all.

A swashbuckling reimagining of Treasure Island that asks: what if the adventure belonged to the women all along? Packed with action, adventure, magic, and mayhem.
