The Darkling Psalter: Contemporary Renditions of Psalms 1-50

By: Patton, Andy

The Darkling Psalter: Contemporary Renditions of Psalms 1-50, is no mere translation of Psalms 1-50, but rather a poetic conversation with Scripture-one with the aim of rendering these ancient songs into fresh language, of weaving in expansive biblical themes, and bending each toward a new poetic embodiment. Patton's goal is to be true to the psalmist, while creating a new work in dialogue with the original voice.

Patton's poems render the psalms into fresh forms and serve as companions to the reading of the Bible, supplementing the reader's experience by giving new shapes to old language. His precise work as a poet has the effect of leading the reader into prayer and catching us off guard with moments of unexpected beauty and depth.
