I could not put this book down. I agree with one of the reviewers below when he wrote, "this has to be the fastest paced thriller I've ever read." There's a slightly sci-fi undertone to this novel which I personally liked. I love it when author's bend genre's. If they ever get around to making it, this will make for an awsome film. The chapters are short and the book clips along at a steady rapid pace. It takes about twenty pages for things to start clicking but once you get passed that threshold, it's like getting passed that initial shove on a big water slide at the waterpark. You scream down the slide and then crash into a great ending. I highly recomend this book. If you are into genre benders, thrillers, sci-fi, and anything Frank Miller, you'll love this book too.
I've never been hooked like this! Amazing!

This is the fastest paced novel I've ever read. I know people say that about thrillers they like, but I've read a lot of thrillers and there is literally absolutely nothing out there like this. This book definitely pushes boundaries unlike any other work of contemporary fiction I've read. The characters are intense and the story even more intense, I could not put it down and often found myself staying up late to read it. As I got closer to the end, I got up early to read before heading off to work just to see what was going to happen next. I would love to see this novel made into a film. On its own, though, this is one amazing work and you'll certainly be hooked and blown away.
Very Interesting Book

The book really hooked me and had me dying to know what happens next. I couldn't put it down. The author has an amazing talent for story telling. After I read this one, I looked for other books this author has written and was surprised to find that Darkest Days was actually the author's debut novel! An author to watch, for sure! I look forward to the author's next novel.
Something You Should Read!

I bought this book for its thought provoking cover with no advance knowledge of its plot and I am so glad I did. It's a disturbing, yet hope driven story, that is so believable given the political atmosphere in the U.S. today. It's surprisingly easy to read, a true "page-turner" in every sense of that description, and it focuses on issues of critical importance. The novel leads you into a world where you will virtually smell, hear, feel, and taste the experiences. Your mind will be fully engaged and your emotions touched. In this novel we see an elitist class that has all of the money and power while the world is left to subdivide all but nothing, sound familiar? The story is told from several points of view. The characters are palpably real. It's a tightly organized study of everything that drives modern societies, including: greed, corruption, self-serving agendas, true vs. false patriotism, the lingering hopes of a disillusioned population, the loss of innocence, compassion, the destruction of civil liberties and freedom, and the urge to make a difference. Most importantly the author explores the nature of war and peace in the modern world. The novel is thought provoking. Gallon has accomplished something remarkable. I'm telling everyone to read this novel. The story is riveting and you should read it too.
An Excellent Unique Thriller!

In reading this novel it is easy to see the reactions could be a "love it or hate it" sort of thing: loved by 75% of the population that sees where the world is going and hated by the 25% who want to take it there. It discusses topics and issues that are relevant to our changing times, and so for those who support the corrupt regimes of such times this is a novel they would not want you to read. If you are the type that wants to close your eyes to the frightening realities unfolding around us then this might not be the book for you. I found this thriller extremely well written. The characters in this novel were intricately developed, especially for readers who know how to read between the lines. My personal favorite was Wallace, for my dad it was President Greeley (a close second to Wallace in my view). I read this novel twice and on my second reading I found many layers built into the story that I was surprised I missed the first time around. To Stanley Gallon's credit he managed to write a novel that on a cursory first read hooks you and keeps you turning pages to find out what is going to happen next. The author embedded historical references in a subtle way throughout the novel that when you realize they are there reveal a more frightening story. As an amateur historian myself, I could not help but be impressed by his ability to draw analogies through his writing to the past in order to tell a terrifying story of the future. The author has a unique style of writing that is suspenseful while getting to the point, colorful while fast paced, action packed while at just the right moments challenging readers to contemplate the deeper story he is telling just below the surface. His descriptions are detailed and vivid. Those of Yellowstone, the Sudanese desert, the White House, the Biltmore Estate, etc. are so intricately crafted you can clearly see them in your mind. I highly recommend this novel.
