Darker than a Brown Paper Bag is a collection of poems written from 2012 to 2023 by CrisVinsh Locke. This collection is a metaphoric spin on the Brown Paper Bag test used as racial and discriminatory practices throughout America during the Jim Crow Era. That was later used at Colleges and Universities as colorism tactics to favor anyone lighter than a brown paper bag over darker skin complexions. Locke uses the symbolic phrase Darker than a Brown Paper Bag to demonstrate how all individuals experience similar journeys, although some are often alienated because of differences. Social issues, injustices, disenfranchisement, historical events, nature, spirituality, religion and emotions are used through out this piece to capture personal and intimate accounts of how the ostracized can persevere through hardship. These poems will take you on an emotional ride from sadness, heartbreak, depression, and obscurity to love, happiness, peace, and empowerment. The goal of the poems is to provide perspective, knowledge, understanding, and healing. Besides, we are not that different after all.
