Dark Water

(Book #2 in the NY State Trooper Series)

Lacy DeGeorgio has always prided herself on her independence and self-reliance. She never expected to be responsible for anyone other than herself. However, when a tragic boating accident claims the life of her sister Hannah, Lacy finds herself thrust into a custody battle for her eleven-year-old nephew, Andy. As if that wasn't challenging enough, she also has to contend with the persistent presence of State Trooper Frank Harmon. Despite her initial resistance, Frank begins to break down her defenses and awaken desires she never thought she would have. While Lacy is willing to trust Frank with the care of her nephew, she wonders if she can trust him with her own heart.

Frank Harmon is a dedicated New York State Trooper who believes in upholding the law and serving justice. He has always followed the rules and believed in the system. However, everything changes when he responds to a domestic disturbance call at the DeGeorgio trailer and is forced to walk away, knowing something terrible is about to happen. Two days later, he discovers Hannah DeGeorgio's lifeless body in the icy waters of Lake George, forever altering his perspective. Driven by a need for justice, Frank becomes determined to find Hannah's killer. In the process, he unexpectedly finds himself creating a home for a family he never thought he wanted, and his feelings for Lacy begin to blur the line between duty and personal desire.

The author presents the hero and heroine beautifully as they fight against their electric feelings for one another, and the problems Andy's father causes. The author also does a magnificent job of showing Frank's guilt over Hannah and Lacy's antipathy toward cops, making for a great deal of fireworks as they connect. The boy, Andy, is so well presented as a troubled preteen that you want to take him home and keep him safe until the problems are solved. The setting is so well described you almost feel the waves lapping at the shore and, when Frank goes diving, you hold your breath, anticipating, hoping, and worrying. The mystery itself is gradually revealed until its climactic conclusion, when we also learn the fate of the two main characters and the boy they both love. I look forward to this author's next book with anticipation. - Jaye Leyel

I want to stay in this town and hang out with these people more

Wow. This was not what I expected. There was some romance, but not so much that it was in your face every time you turned around. I don't typically read this genre, but I am trying to widen my horizons. I'm glad I did. The characters were well drawn, and the scenes Holbrook creates in her story was spot on. I felt like I was there, in the summer on the lake, hanging with Lacy and her nephew and Frank. Good job, Ms. Holbrook. You put me INTO the story. Although I didn't understand the woman in the story (I dont understand women in general!) she was well formed. I wanted her to take more charge than she did, but the dude did it plenty. I like it when the man takes charge. The build up of suspense was gradual. And she leads you down a path you don't know you're going down...until you get there. She even throws out a few red herrings that I seriously bit down on. Touche' Overall, a pretty good yarn. It would be a good book to take to the lake or the beach during the summer and read. I flew through it.
