one of my....

this book is one of my favorite books , not only because it portrays a being similiar to a lycanthrope but, because of the way he gets changed. what i mean is normally the victim is wounded by another lycan, but in this case it is all about enhanced humans per say and the enhancment changes the man.

How to Make a Werewolf

A neurosurgeon discovers that he has a nearly inoperable brain tumor and thinks that his life is over. If the tumor is removed through surgery, he will lose much of his senses. But with the tumor, another change enters his life in the form of a beautiful doctor. The two fall in love quickly and she hears of a possible new procedure that may help him. Having committed himself to trying the experimental procedure of a secretive doctor, he comes out of the operation a changed man. Unknown to him, the surgeon has been trying to develop enhanced soldiers by splicing animal DNA into volunteer soldiers. The neurosurgeon is his first non-military test. Thinking he might lose some of his senses, the neurosurgeon is amazed to find that his senses are better than ever but strange things begin to happen to him. As the story develops, the main characters have to find out what has been done and how to stop it from happening again. Although there are some horror elements, this is really a thriller what with its military secrets, Senate investigations, cover ups, spies, and more. The horror elements are almost toned down and certainly not dwelled upon. All in all it makes for a very interesting book and a new take on an old idea.

THE NICE WEREWOLF

DARK MOON RISING by paperback horror writer James M. Thompson is such a "nice" book, you can't help but like it in spite of its derivative mediocrity. The hero, Dr. James Wilcox, is a hunky young doctor who is also a neurosurgeon operating on people with brain tumors. When the saintly doctor discovers he has his own inoperable brain tumor, he is devastated. Seems that they if they remove his tumor, he will lose his senses of smell and taste, most of his vision, and will never be able to operate again. His young and beautiful resident assistant, Dr. Sydney Coleman, becomes his lover and best friend. Meanwhile, Dr. Albert Stern, a Boris Karloffish type of genius, has developed a kind of surgery that has unfortunate results. Stern is able to take DNA from animals and fuse into humans giving them heightened senses, and of course is joined with General Blackwood and a rogue soldier named Jack Stone in creating perfect fighting weapons for the military. Stern decides to try his experiments on a non-military person and of course Dr. James Wilcox is his subject. Thompson is one of those writers whose skill is in the ordinary, borrowing bits of Dean Koontz, John Saul and other writers. His story is easy to read and involving, although it is somewhat predictable and the ending feels rushed and anticlimactic. Thompson obviously likes to write about sexual encounters, as the heroes and even the villains are often getting down and dirty. If you like your horror stories with happy endings, then DARK MOON RISING will be enjoyable for you.
