Thirty-three-year-old Martin Black is happy to coast along in his small criminal law practice in a northern English town that has its fair share of deprivation and crime. He's never wanted to set the world alight, but has the modest ambition to make just a bit more profit. When an opportunity presents itself on a plate, he grabs it with both hands.

He soon learns to be careful what he wishes for, finding himself caught up in a spider's web he could never have dreamed of. His involvement leads him inexorably into a dark place with no easy way out. Then, the hand of fate intervenes to provide an escape, but only if Martin is willing to embark on a journey which will change him forever, and see him question both his beliefs and the people around him.
