The Dark Christal (1982)
The Power of Myth brought home by Jim Henson
The story is of a myth being fulfilled in a strange but seemingly familiar land. A land that was split asunder with the shattering of a great crystal. The reason for this is revealed in time. However, we are concerned with a Gelfling that was charged with either healing the world or letting it live in evil for all time.
This is a classic movie that can almost be placed in the cult class. I have watched several media versions and can say this is one film that is enhanced by the Blu-ray treatment. True, the acting is the same, and the story is the same. But the visuals and music, which are equal partners with the rest of the characters, are more intense.
Watching the Blu-ray extras, the voice-over by conceptual designer Brian Froud, who also did the voice-over for “Labyrinth,” we find that the title of this film might have been “Dark Chrysalis,” as it is a movie about change.
Take heart that they did not place a lot of coming attractions at the front of the DVD, and that the Blu-ray extras still do not get in the way of the film as some do.

Labyrinth (1986)
Light, fun musical fantasy about a coming-of-age teenage girl.
"You have no power over me."
Teenage Sarah (Jennifer Connelly) lives in her fantasy world and resents having to take care of her younger brother Toby (Toby Froud, son of Conceptual Designer Brian Froud). She wishes that the Goblin King (David Bowie), who is enamored with her, would take Toby away now. Be careful of what you wish for. Toby is whisked off to the Goblin King's castle beyond the goblin city and behind a great labyrinth. Now Sarah has just 13 hours to navigate the labyrinth and retrieve Toby if that is what she wants.
We get to travel with Sarah through all the trials and tribulations. We get to kibitz, do not go this way, do not go that way. And you guessed it, Sarah does go this way, and Sarah does go that way. In the meantime, she learns what friendship and fairness are all about and gains a new respect for her new and old friends.
This is Jennifer Connelly’s third film before quitting the industry to go to college. Of course, she is back now and a stronger actress than ever.
I have seen this presentation on TV and VHS. However, for some reason, I forgot that it was a musical fantasy, even though I knew it had David Bowie. Now with the advent of Blu-Ray, I am revisiting all the old films, and this one came up on the list. The visuals are spectacular. The voiceover gives you new insights as to what they were trying to do in the movie. Occasionally, especially at first, it looks like the characters are lip-synching and the sound does not match exactly. Later, this is either corrected or you do not notice it anymore.
