The children in my classroom are enjoying Darinka. Most of my children in Buffalo only have their dreams. They have some rough backgrounds. Darinka encourages them to hold on to their dreams. Maybe with some luck a few of them will realize some success.

The author is obviously a very talented writer to be able to capture so much in a book and be able to teach a valuable lesson to children about not giving up on your dreams.

I love art and deer. I love art because you can make anything you want. Darinka felt sad when she couldn't find the colors. Darinka thought she would feel happy when she found the colors in the city but she felt sad because nobody wanted to see her pictures. Darinka got happy again when everybody came to the party. That made me happy too.

During our study of New York City habitatsI read "Darinka" to my second grade students. I was thrilled by their responses to this story! At the conclusion, I asked what the author's message may have been. Answers included that you should "stick to your dreams" and that you should "follow your heart" even if it means "sticking out of the crowd." I'm so happy that second graders could verbalize these important life lessons after such a fine book! Bravo, Rachel Luna!
