A Travelogue for Wusses

OK, I'll admit it: the idea of traveling anywhere that doesn't have gender-specific Kohler fixtures behind a lockable door never appealed to me. Call me prissy if you will, but until I read Stockwell's "Dare to Travel the World," I'd never seen The Toilet Issue addressed in any travel guide. Come to think of it, I'd never seen a travel writer acknowledge that there's a whole world of people out here who quake at the thought of visiting off-the-beaten-path (i.e. non-European) destinations like Beijing, Harare, Mumbai... Stockwell makes it OK to be nervous about traveling to exotic locales. A world-traveler herself, she freely shares lessons she learned the hard way with those of us who are less adventurous. This book is easy to read, easy to cart around in a backpack, easy to reference, and packed with common sense. If you're planning a trip--or would if you could work up the courage--this book is a must. It's like having a funny, practical, real-life traveling companion right by your side--one who understands your deepest fears and doesn't make fun of them.

I enjoyed paging through it. I kept landing on the toilet stories. I have a few good ones too. The meat of the book is the reality check, good information for travelers. The cultural information is an added bonus that gave me an idea of behavior and what to expect. I've been to about half of the desitnations mentioned. I want to make it to the other half. Now I have some info to go on. Great read!

I enjoyed paging through it. Picked it up and went straight to the Russia chapter, then South Africa. I practiced the 10 words to GET BY in Turkish at a recent party with my company friends, they were impressed. I kept landing on the toilet stories. I have a few good ones too. The meat of the book is the reality check, good information for professionals going on assignment. I just returned from India, that chapter is a must read for anyone going there. The cultural information is an added bonus that gave me an idea of behavior and what to expect. I've been to about half of the desitnations mentioned. I want to make it to the other half. Now I have some info to go on. Great read and easy to view the info.
