"Darby Mansion" is more than a bit autobiographical. I wrote it from memory in 1968 but made up many of the incidents, most of which were very much like what actually happened. The reader will recognize that I was channeling Mark Twain, John Steinbeck, James T. Farrell and perhaps a bit of J. D. Salinger, writers who had greatly influenced me as a teenager and as a young man. I hope in a small way I live up to that great tradition in American letters.
