The history of perhaps the most famous Irish folksong Danny Boy (the melody of which is also known as Londonderry Air), is steeped in mystery. It was first published, without a title, in Dublin in 1855 and was apparently collected by a Miss Jane Ross, who claimed to have taken it down from the playing of an itinerant piper. However, although it is often assumed to be an old, traditional tune, its structure and meter do not fit any of the known Irish folksong forms.
