The Book of Daniel is a unique combination of history, dreams, and visions of the future. Daniel was born in a noble family in Judah in or about 621 BC. Daniel was a worshipper of the only true God even as a teenager. When Nebuchadnezzar II subdued Jerusalem in 605 BC, Daniel was taken to the capital city of Babylon. Instead of being oppressed by his captors, Daniel was selected to be a part of a training program designed to turn the Jewish youths into officials of the Neo-Babylonian Empire. Daniel was an outstanding student and, after his schooling, he was taken into the service of the king. It was then that his great adventure of 70 years began. He served Nebuchadnezzar II, and the kings that followed, with distinction. However, that does not mean he and his friends did not encounter times of distress. Daniel and his friends were almost executed just after they finished their training, but God saved them by giving Daniel the answers that Nebuchadnezzar II demanded of his wisemen. God then saved Daniel's friends when they refused to bow before an image that Nebuchadnezzar II had built. Later, God saved Daniel when Darius the Mede was forced to throw Daniel into the lions den. In between and after these spin-chilling events, God gave Daniel dreams and visions of the future, much of which has already come to pass, but some have yet to be fulfilled. In short, the Book of Daniel is an exciting exploration of the past and of the future!
