I lost myself almost painfully in it for a whole afternoon, and when a male friend of mine happened to pick it up later and comment that the amount of the book devoted to sex seemed to get in the way of the story, I almost tore him limb from limb...it was the fact that I could relate in a very real and familiar way to the sensations, thoughts, and experiences of this woman's life. Ruby Turner dances with words with a "fierce and holy joy."
