In 1992 Cara and Mathew Barham inherit Valentine Hall. After viewing the property with the sole intention of selling it, they decide instead to live there. Despite the fact, that the house was built in 1702, its dilapidated state and over abundance of rooms they are drawn into the sheer magnetism of its mixture of warmth and mystery. Three months after moving in, Cara is visited by a rather strange woman who introduces herself as Emily Potter, a former friend of their benefactor. However, Emily proves to be a force to be reckoned with. So much so, that Cara and Mathew are almost torn apart by the sheer intensity of Emily's request for help. Cara finds herself unable to refuse Emily's request and it takes a great deal of heartache and persuasion to bring Mathew around to accepting the challenge. What Emily Potter wants, is for Cara to write the full story about the life of her former employer's young daughter Rosamund, who after an arranged marriage in her sixteenth year to Lord Nicholas Valentine is brought to live at Valentine Hall. From there on Rosamund suffers violence and oppression at the hands of her wicked jealous husband. She eventually loses her baby and almost her sanity. But it doesn't end there More evil is heaped upon Rosamund and the whole household by Miss Henrietta Blackmore, who has been brought in to nurse Rosamund back to health. Finally a twist of fate and the intervention of his Lordships manservant brings an end to Rosamund's years of torment. However, for the long-suffering Emily Potter, only a truly written account of Rosamund's years of misery with the so-called Lord Nicholas Valentine will suffice. Then and only then can Cara and Mathew get on with their lives and Emily put herself to rest.
