The threat of neurofibromatosis plagues Pam

"Family Secrets" is the 14th in a series of novelizations on the 1980s "Dallas" TV series. The books come from the Soaps & Serials imprint of Pioneer Communications Network, which also did similar novelizations of TV's "Guiding Light," "Days of Our Lives" and "Dallas" spinoff "Knots Landing," among others. This one begins with the recovery of little John Ross from the hands of his kidnapper. The baby is returned safe and sound, but Sue Ellen doesn't seem to care. She's still very withdrawn, determined to no longer be used and abused by the men in her life. Digger visits his son and daughter from the West Coast, where he has been happier without the shroud of Ewing Oil hanging over him. But he's sick, and when Cliff and Pam insist on a visit to the doctor, it's discovered he has the disease neurofibromatosis. This is why two of his children did not survive infancy. This sends Pam into a tailspin, as she desperately wants to have Bobby's children. Patricia and Kristin Shepard arrive from out of town to provide "support" to Sue Ellen, Kristin increasingly intrigued by her sister's husband. Lucy is settling in to life at Southern Methodist University -- Jock's alma mater -- and trying out for the cheerleading squad. Her mother Valene catches up to her at college and gets the cold shoulder from the daughter who thinks she accepted a bribe from J.R. to leave. Alan Beam begins his unholy alliance with J.R. to bring down the gullible Cliff in a campaign bid. And Pam learns she's pregnant and panics, even considering abortion to spare the agony of carrying then losing a child to the rare genetic disease.
