"Love's Challenge" is the third in a series of novelizations on the 1980s "Dallas" TV series. The books come from the Soaps & Serials imprint of Pioneer Communications Network, which also did similar novelizations of TV's "Guiding Light," "Days of Our Lives" and "Dallas" spinoff "Knots Landing," among others. There are at least 14 books in the "Dallas" series. This book focuses on the second-season episodes "Bypass" and "Black Market Baby." Bobby has been working at Ewing Oil for a couple months and J.R. has managed to nose him out of any of the important business deals. Jock is worried about the tension between his two sons. Sue Ellen, meanwhile, is trying unsuccessfully to become pregnant so that she can have that elusive Ewing heir. Jock has a heart attack while calling J.R. to the carpet over his dealings with Bobby. Jock is hospitalized and requires a triple bypass surgery. After two tense weeks, he returns to Southfork a changed man. And, in yet another incident where J.R. rejects her then drives off the ranch to get a call girl, Sue Ellen throws herself at Ray. Sue Ellen then decides that she's going to adopt a child. She visits Brentwood Adoption Services first and learns of a several-year wait for a baby. She then gets a line on a lawyer who arranges "private adoptions" -- black market babies. She visits Buzz Connors then the pregnant female that he points out to her, Rita Briggs. Sue Ellen buys all manner of comforts for the coarse and unappreciative Rita, and the time for delivery gets closer. J.R. gets wind of it, though, and arranges to have Rita shipped out of town, spoiling Sue Ellen's plan.
