In Daisychains Anita Lounsbach writes a wonderful account of the trials and tribulations of the extended Connolly family exploring the complexities and nature of people. Set in Manchester, the character of each family member develops throughout the book until you feel you know them personally, and discover each is not as first perceived. Ida - a tough cookie, seemingly cold-hearted and selfish but is she really? And if so what has made her this way? Ida's three daughters, all so different in character. Jo - constantly looking for good causes, Helen - trying to escape a loveless, controlling marriage and Eve - the black sheep of the family. Then there is Joe, a raconteur and chancer of a husband and father. And finally Daisy - Ida's mother - the stubborn grandmother who must have it her way, with a thirst for adventure tapered with a fear of dying. These characters are interspersed with a colourful array of supporting people with their own personalities and troubles. Daisychains is an exceptional book; funny and at times heart-breaking. A book you will find difficult to put down.
