Daily Paragraph Editing, Grade 5 Teacher Edition

This fifth grade teacher's resource includes 36 weeks of targeted lessons that will immediately become your favorite supplement to your language arts curriculum. The 176 focused language arts activities provide the practice students need to produce error-free writing assignments and include easy-to-use teacher support to deliver the lessons.

Lessons include 36 weeks of daily practice that cover these skills and concepts:

Capitalization: Quotations, salutations, titles of books, magazines, movies, and songs, incorrect use of capitals and more Language Usage: Singular and plural forms, verb tenses, correct use of pronouns and adjectival and adverbial forms Punctuation: Appostrophes, commas, periods, colons, semi-colons and more. Spelling: identifying errors in spelling and in multiple-meaning words

Additional resources include:

a reproducible student language handbook that provides simple, clear rules and examples of their application to guide students in correct use of the mechanics, grammar, and spelling skills covered in the daily paragraphs. a page of reproducible proofreading marks that models the standard markings used to correct and edit text. an editing checklist to guide students in reviewing and revising their own writing or that of a peer. an assessment rubric to guide teachers in conducting a holistic evaluation of student writing.

How it Works:

Students apply grade 5 language skills to correct a paragraph on Monday through Thursday; when read together, the four paragraphs form a cohesive composition. A writing prompt on Friday relates to the week's four-paragraph composition and provides an opportunity for students to apply the targeted language conventions they practiced. The weekly passages cover a broad range of expository and narrative writing forms, including:

nonfiction texts on grade-level social studies and science topics biographies, book reviews, instructions, interviews, journal entries, and letters fables, fantasy and science fiction, historical fiction, personal narratives,
and realistic fiction

Good but not daily

This is good for 4th, 5th, even 6th graders. It has only 4 days a week (Monday through Thursday), so it's best suited for after school homework. I let my 5th grader do all 4 days together on Saturday because each day is just 1/4 of one whole article or story.

Punctuation Salvation

I have struggled teaching punctuation to jr high students. We started doing the paragraph editing on a daily basis and believe it or not, my students enjoy this! They have made enough progress that as I read the paragraph they say the mistakes with me! This book is a grade level below what I teach, and now they are asking to move up to the next grade level! I have not done the paragraphs in order, but have selected what I feel is most interesting to them, or ties in with a lesson from another class. This was money well spent!

Daily Paragraph Editing

This is a wonderful way to help kids learn to find mistakes in everyday writing.
