Daedalus ( Or, Science and the Future ), was written by British biologist and neo-Darwinist theorist J.B.S. Haldane and was originally published in 1924. Daedalus was originally the text of a lecture given to the Heretics Society, (a Humanist society at the University of Cambridge), on the 4th of February, 1923. In the lecture Haldane uses the myth of Daedalus as a symbol for the revolutionary nature of science. While he was sceptical about the benefits of some scientific advances for society, believing that advances would cause problems for mankind, he hoped they would be best ameliorated by advanced in ethics and social organisation. The work is also known for its seminal influence on the movement of Transhumanism, (and self-directed evolution) as well as being a massive influence on Aldous Huxley and the writing of Brave New World .
