He lost his father at the age of four, and the family of six siblings faced severe financial difficulties. By the age of seven, he was forced to start working. At seventeen, he moved to Boston, and by twenty, he had relocated to Chicago. It was there that God began an incredible work through Moody that would span forty years. He became a powerful soul-winner in an era when travel was slow and communication tools were nonexistent. One million souls were saved through his preaching and programs. Three Christian schools were established, a publishing house bearing his name was launched, and thousands of ministers were inspired by him.
He was never ordained into the ministry of any church, yet he was the most widely heard evangelist of his time. He captivated audiences with an intimate, emotional storytelling style.
