Can the ending to this story be anything other than French? Probably not but I can't say for sure because it's impossible to draw the curtain on yourself when you're centerstage in the final scene. The best I can do is to leave off knowing I revised this memoir until I no longer could. In fact, I've come to believe that's the best anyone can do. There's no such thing as perfection when there's always room for improvement and finding that room means staying honest. This realization has made me think Hemingway was talking about honesty when he said there's nothing noble in being superior to your fellow man; true nobility is being superior to your former self. After all, revising ourselves into better people means first having the ability to take long hard looks in the mirror. I've never felt wise but if I had to convey something resembling wisdom, then it would be this: Stay honest, resist the sweetest lies, and take heart from knowing your superior self is forever a revision away.
