"Curving Road" steers readers through life-world experiences

"Curving Road" captures a metaphorical essence of Stewart's preceptions of culture, music and people. The book was written before he began his Ph.D. program in Anthropology where he has since made fine contributions in fiction and anthropology, and the ethnology of his birthplace-Trinidad. In the lead story of this collection, "Pablo's Blues", Stewart manages to harmonize various cultural elements and compose a vivid and lasting expression of Miles Davis' cool-jazz ballad of the same name. We follow Pablo through the course of his day as he mentally syncopates between cultural tradition and modernism. His experiences of the butcher's shop, the walk through hilly avenues and his ambigious relationship with his lover create an air of spontaneity--the stuff of live jazz and life-world experiences. In "Satin's Dream", Stewart uses contemporary metaphor to sketch out a soul beleagured by control and identity issues. Overall, readers will find the stories in Curving Road to be engaging, vivid and intellectually rewarding.---Mark Fabiano
