An anthology containing twenty-two short stories by well-known American and English authors. Includes discussion questions and a glossary. This description may be from another edition of this product.
I'm shocked that this is still in print -- my edition is dated 1968. But this anthology is probably what first turned me on to short stories, and I'm still clinging to my worn copy. My personal favorites are Richard Connell's "The Most Dangerous Game," Ray Bradbury's "All Summer in a Day", and Maupassant's "The Necklace", but it also includes stories by H.H. Munro, Jack London, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, Pearl Buck, O. Henry, Shirley Jackson, and more. This collection is designed as a student's book, with the stories grouped according to common themes and followed by a few paragraphs of "study ideas", but the pedagogy never intrudes on the fiction and the physical book itself -- at least the 1968 edition! -- is a nice trade paper, easy on the eyes, pleasant in the hands, and not at all textbook-y.
