Non-surgical periodontal therapy (NSPT) is the primary method for managing periodontal disease by controlling infection and preventing further tissue destruction. It mainly involves removal of plaque biofilm and calculus through scaling and root planing. Current concepts extend beyond mechanical debridement to include risk factor control, host modulation, and improved plaque control. Adjuncts such as local drug delivery, lasers, and photodynamic therapy further enhance treatment outcomes. Overall, NSPT and its current concepts support minimally invasive strategy for maintaining long-term periodontal health.
