Cumberland Valley Sketchbook

Cumberland Valley Sketchbook is a collection of pen & ink drawings that represent the diverse and colorful history of that unique section of southeastern Kentucky It is the effort of artist/historian Robert A. Powell to preserve vital bits of heritage to be appreciated by present & future generations. The book covers the eight Kentucky counties of Bell, Clay, Harlan, Jackson, Knox, Laurel, Rockcastle and Whitley. The landmarks of the area are depicted in the unique and distinctive art that earned RAP the title of Heritage Artist by Kentucky Governor Wendell Ford in 1973. Since that time he has served the title well by documenting America's colorful heritage. Each subject in the Cumberland Valley Sketchbook is accompanied by a full-page narrative that describes its significance to the history and heritage of Southeastern Kentucky, as well as the nation. The format is the large 8x10 inch art-book style with a pen & ink drawing of a landmark on one page and the descriptive narrative on the facing page. The book starts with a brief overview of the region, then continues with a drawing of each courthouse and the brief history of the county. That is then followed by landmarks from each of the eight counties in the Cumberland Valley region listed in alphabetic order by subject title. The book includes an abbreviated Index, and concludes with RAP's illustrations of the Kentucky state symbols and the American Flag.
