Cults: An Analytical Study of Fraternities in Nigerian Universities

INTRODUCTION

DELINQUENT SUBCULTURES

People become acculturated through the process of socialization consciously or unconsciously, which is either positive or negative. Positive socialization process refers to those acceptable processes of transmitting and maintaining social norms and values of particular society while transmission of unacceptable social norms and values are regarded as negative socialization.

However, in every society there are multiplicities of culture traits to which people subscribe. Not everyone subscribes to the mass culture - shared by majority of people in the society, some belong to the specialties-one aspect of behavior in the society such as occupation and others belong to the subcultures or alternative cultures-range of cultural elements sufficiently broad to constitute a new characteristic way of life.

Subculture is a culture within a larger culture. A situation in which certain groups within the society share interrelated set of behaviour patterns, which are not commonly shared by others in the larger society.
Albert Cohen (1955:14) explains it,

'as a system of beliefs and values generated in a process of communicative interaction among children similarly circumstanced by virtue of their positions in the social structure and as constituting a solution to the established culture provide no satisfactory solutions'.
