A Grateful Brain
The medial prefrontal cortex is engaged when one perceives thanks. This portion of the brain is situated in the frontal lobe, where the two cerebral hemispheres join. The medial pre-frontal cortex is involved with socializing and pleasure, perceiving others' viewpoints, empathy, and sentiments of relaxation.
Gratitude is related to systems of the brain that manage emotions and encourage stress reduction, such as heart rate, arousal levels, and pain. When engaged, certain areas of the brain may boost positive emotions and protect against feelings of anxiety and tension, resulting in an overall calmer mood.
