These "Sentimental Tales" are satirical portraits of characters living on the margins of Soviet society in the decade following the Bolshevik Revolution. Told by Kolenkorov, a thoroughly unmodel Soviet narrator--nostalgic for the old regime and a clumsy writer at best--the stories deliberately adopt an awkward prose style filled with clich s, tortured metaphors, and misused bureaucratic jargon.
