Set in the 2010s, "Cuban Telenovelas Don't Need Scripts" is a collection of four novellas that travel from small town Cuba to Havana to Toronto. The stories revolve around human connection, romance, loyalties, and social norms that are born of the challenges faced in modern day Cuba.
Readers will find themselves conflicted over the different protagonists' actions once they get a glimpse of their motives. Crossing over generational lines and staring racial biases in the face, the stories do not attempt to make excuses for any of the characters, but do explain the lengths they feel they must go to in order to survive a stagnant and constantly frustrating reality on the island. The collection will feel like a travel guide at times as the novellas describe the drive from Varadero to Havana, the area around Cayo Coco and Ciego de Avila, and some parts of Toronto. While the stories are completely made up, the circumstances that create them are far from fictious; Cuba's reality is incredibly unique, and Cubans face their everyday unknowns with dignity and creativity.
