Crystal from the Hills

Chris "Crystal" Leavitt stands near the entrance of a freeway in Oakland, Ca., holding a sign that reads "Hungry White Trash". He's been a diletante homeless man for several days, wandering the streets in the aftermath of his misadventures: he's been suspended from his job, left his apartment, his girlfriend, his friends and family, even his creative ideas all behind. Worst of all, he's suffered a terrible accident with a mystery at its core. Weed, his dark companion and mentor of licentious behavior, has disappeared, and possibly died. Chris is traumatized, flirting with psychosis, and still coming down from a previous methamphetamine habit. But he is not alone. He has never been alone. He is stalked by images--"Shadows" and "Breathers" he calls them--that are ambiguously malevolent, supplying him with important visions about himself and the world at large, and calling upon his conscience. Can he continue to evade his responsibilities, reality? Will his friends, Jill or Sweet, or his rich Aunt from the hills, talk sense into him, penetrate his self-absorbing defenses, and stir him into action? Over the space of three days Chris Leavitt must decide what is reality, and make serious decisions about his future and his past.
