In 1936 an idealistic young sculptor from Chelsea made a decision to join the International Brigades and fight the Spanish Civil War. He fought there for only nine months before being invalided, but learned enough to understand how little place his vague Bohemian idealism had in such a struggle. Gurney wrote this book long after his experience in the war, based on his memories and diary entries. It is a moving story which looks at the sweetness of idealism and what happens to it in the context of war. He clearly was not a professional writer, but with what he had to say, he did not need to be. A look at a nearly forgotten time, still well worth reading.
