From choosing the prince's bride... To becoming his unexpected princess Personal assistant Latika Bakshmi had one job--pick a suitable wife for playboy Prince Gunnar. He's infuriating, arrogant and far too handsome, but when shadows from Latika's past return, he's the only man who can save her...if he agrees to her shocking proposition Nothing surprises cynical Gunnar, until deliciously disapproving Latika asks him to marry her Recognizing her desperation, he'll protect her with all his royal power. But the biggest surprise isn't their sizzling chemistry, but how dangerously permanent his craving for his temporary princess feels...
This is a beautiful example of Maisey Yates' finer efforts. I sometimes find her inconsistent in the quality of the messages her work conveys- but am rarely disappointed with the overall result. The female lead, Latika, is a study in moving beyond the future others plan for us and finding our own path, on our own terms. She was resourceful, intelligent, and a strong female character. Often it is perceived that those who act to protect themselves are selfish, self-serving. Latika moved beyond her need for physical safety to provide a safe emotional haven for someone more needy and deserving of preservation. Gunnar. The male protagonist, Gunnar, was a tortured, haunted man, who believed himself incapable of love- despite having dedicated his life to his sister, the Queen- his twin. His efforts and care epitomized the truest sense of love- loyalty, reverence, self-sacrifice. This reader hoped for love, respect and consideration to come into this marriage of convenience, and Gunner's acknowledgement of his potential for the emotion he seemed not to crave. Yates weaved an incredible tale- such an emotional journey to something more than anticipated by the protagonists. Well done!
