Excellent Book - I highly recommend it!

Crosswind is a unique book that serves several purposes. First, it is an accurate introduction to the sport of soaring. Second, it is a wonderful story for young people. I liked the parakeet and the wraith.

Crosswind revisited

I first read Patricia Valdata's Crosswind more than a year ago and still remember Ellen Horvath vividly. the author does an exceptional job of character building and the plot soars as easily and clearly as do the gliders she flies. I have never flown in a glider or sailplane, but Valdata's book lets me share the experience and watch a young woman (Ellen Horvath) grow through her love of flight. Valadata has written an exceptionally able first novel.

What it's like to love something

Crosswind captures the reasons that make people, especially women, want to fly. The reader shares our heroine's joy when she finally, after overcoming several obstacles--family troubles, money, etc.--,takes flight for the first time. The details are realistic--you know that the author must be a pilot!--and the characters are likeable. I've bought this book as a gift for my daughter-in-law, another pilot. I enjoyed reading it myself (and found it just the right size to read while on a flight--commercial, I hasten to add). I look forward to Ms Valdata's next one.

Fabulous writing style! Left me wanting to read the sequel.

Patricia Valdata captured me in the first two pages, which is very difficult to do! Ms. Valdata's writing style is rare these days, descriptions so wonderful it put me right in the scene. With many different twists and turns Crosswind takes you through the life of college student Ellen Horvath, whose life is changed by tragedy, and revived by a new found love for flying. As a non-flyer I really enjoyed the portions of the book involving gliding, and especially enjoyed the complex characters that Ms. Valdata created. I laughed, I cried, I sighed, and I want to know what next! A witty book, with lots of irony. Follow Ellen through the highs and lows of her life, from the hardest days to the best. The character develops courage and character that a lot of us are lacking these days. A rewarding read, and full of impact. A bit of a morbid bend at times, but handled very nicely with wit and wisdom, and a good belly laugh. I look forward to Ms. Valdata's next book.
