Akitomo Matsuki and I collaborated on an anesthesia history book called And She Felt No Pain: A Japanese Doctor, His Herbal Invention, and the First General Anesthesia in Recorded History. Meanwhile, I was helping him with his English. A one-paragraph English abstract is required for his journal articles; one revision led to the next, and five years later I'm still his trusty abstract editor!

When I told him I wanted to write a companion book for And She Felt No Pain, with him as the subject this time, he said, "I welcome your idea of making a companion book for ASFNP. I think there is no problem for doing so. And, I will support you as much as I possibly can." This brilliant and accomplished anesthesiologist and medical historian, winner of several awards, is an incredibly kind and humble person. He's also really funny. Crossroads Diary captures the man, his culture, and the crossroads where his world and my world meet.
