Pearl's book is an enjoyable and educational one. I learned much about the Minnonite people--their religion, culture and history both in Russia and the United States. The romantic story of the love between Hilda and Tag is touching and realistic.

Crossing Sand Creek is an exceptional tale of adventure, danger, and love, set in the late 1870s opening in the Ukraine of Russia and quickly moving to central Kansas.Pearl Burk lends credence to the story with her accurate attention to detail and complete devotion to her heritage. The plot flows through the lives of the Frey family as they embark on a journey to freedom in the new world.Hilda is torn between her father who requires her to hold onto their Mennonite faith, family values, and a planned marriage in which she has no say; and her heart given Tag Hayes, a general store and saloon owner in Newton, Kansas.During a dangerous escapade, in the middle of the night, her choice is directed and her heart wins the battle as a new journey begins. But Tag Hayes has his own demons to fight. He's been haunted by amnesia for the past ten years as well as nightly nightmares which he can't explain. As the saga continues, he's led on a merry chase through Kansas and ending in Texas to find his own journey's end.Pearl's work is nothing short of genius, pulling together historical facts and figures and fictional characters to produce a historical beyond compare.
