Pedro L. San Miguel obtuvo un doctorado en Historia en Columbia University (1987) y es catedrático en la Universidad de Puerto Rico-Río Piedras. Pese a ello, se concibe como un 'diletante cultural', lo que lo ha llevado a escribir, imprudentemente, sobre temas diversos, como: la historia agraria del Caribe; las luchas campesinas; las discursivas nacionales y el papel de los intelectuales en la construcción de dichas discursivas; la historiografía y la historia cultural; y las representaciones de México en la historiografía estadounidense. Producto de su diletantismo son: Los campesinos del Cibao: Economía del mercado y transformación agraria en la República Dominicana, 1880-1960 (1997), y *La isla imaginada: Historia, identidad y utopía en La Española *(1997; 2a edición 2008; edición en inglés 2005). ~ Pedro L. San Miguel obtained a Ph.D in History from Columbia University (1987) and is a professor at the University of Puerto Rico-Río Piedras. Despite this, he sees himself as a 'cultural dilettante', which has led him to write recklessly on various topics, such as: the agrarian history of the Caribbean; peasant struggles; national discourses and the role of intellectuals in the construction of said discourses; historiography and cultural history; and the representations of Mexico in American historiography. Product of his dilettantism are: The peasants of Cibao: Market economy and agrarian transformation in the Dominican Republic, 1880-1960 (1997), and The imagined island: History, identity and utopia in La Española (1997; 2nd edition 2008; edition in English 2005).
